Welcome to whatsthesalary.com (“we”, “us”, or “our”), operated from New Zealand. We are committed to protecting your personal information. This policy explains what we collect when you use the site, including salary lookups, optional myWTS accounts, analytics, and advertising. Questions? Email [email protected].
If you do not agree with this policy, please stop using the site. This policy applies to whatsthesalary.com and related services (collectively, the “Services”).
1. Salary lookups (no account required)
You can look up a Seek job salary without signing in. When you submit a job URL or ID, we send the Seek job identifier to our backend so we can calculate the advertised pay range. We do not ask for your name or email for this feature.
To run the lookup and prevent abuse, our servers may log technical data such as your IP address, browser type, approximate country (from CloudFront), language preference, and the job ID searched. We also store aggregate salary results in our database (job title, pay range, location, classification, and how often a job is checked). This operational data is not linked to your identity unless you are signed in and save the lookup to your account (see below).
Before a lookup runs, we use Cloudflare Turnstile to help block bots and automated scraping. Turnstile may set cookies or collect device signals; see Cloudflare’s privacy policy for details.
2. myWTS accounts (optional sign-in)
If you create a free myWTS account, we collect:
Email address — used to send a one-time sign-in code and to identify your account.
First name — shown in the app when you are signed in.
City — stored on your profile at registration.
We store a one-way hash of your email address in Amazon DynamoDB (AWS Sydney region). We do not store your plaintext email in that database. Sign-in codes expire after a short period. Session tokens are stored in your browser’s local storage and as hashed records on our servers; they expire after 30 days unless you sign out sooner.
Sign-in emails are sent through Resend. Rate limits apply to code requests to reduce spam and abuse.
3. Saved job history (signed-in users)
When you are signed in, you can save Seek jobs you have looked up, add notes, and mark whether you applied. We store this against your account hash: job ID, job title, salary range, country, classification, Seek URL, your notes, an “applied” flag, and when you last viewed the job. This is kept in DynamoDB so you can access your history across devices while logged in. Sign out removes the session token from your browser; server-side history remains until you ask us to delete it.
4. Analytics and advertising
We use Google Tag Manager (container GTM-5T75BFL), which may load analytics tags such as Google Analytics, to understand how visitors use the site — for example page views, searches, and errors. Google may use cookies and similar technologies. You can learn more in Google’s Privacy Policy and opt out via Google’s opt-out add-on.
We also use Amplitude for product analytics and session replay. Amplitude may collect how you use the site — for example page views, clicks, salary lookup outcomes, contact form topics, and diagnostic events when something goes wrong. It may assign a device identifier and collect browser and device information. Session replay may record a visual replay of your visit (such as scrolling and on-page interactions) to help us understand usability issues; content visible on screen during the session may appear in those replays. Amplitude uses cookies and similar technologies. Data is processed by Amplitude, Inc. (United States). See Amplitude’s Privacy Notice.
We display advertising through Mediavine to help keep this service free. The required disclosure for Mediavine's programmatic advertising is set out below.
Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)
The Website works with Mediavine to manage third-party interest-based advertising appearing on the Website. Mediavine serves content and advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first and third-party cookies. A cookie is a small text file which is sent to your computer or mobile device (referred to in this policy as a “device”) by the web server so that a website can remember some information about your browsing activity on the Website.
First party cookies are created by the website that you are visiting. A third-party cookie is frequently used in behavioral advertising and analytics and is created by a domain other than the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons and other similar technologies (collectively, “Tags”) may be placed on the Website to monitor interaction with advertising content and to target and optimize advertising. Each internet browser has functionality so that you can block both first and third-party cookies and clear your browser’s cache. The "help" feature of the menu bar on most browsers will tell you how to stop accepting new cookies, how to receive notification of new cookies, how to disable existing cookies and how to clear your browser’s cache. For more information about cookies and how to disable them, you can consult the information at All About Cookies.
Without cookies you may not be able to take full advantage of the Website content and features. Please note that rejecting cookies does not mean that you will no longer see ads when you visit our Site. In the event you opt-out, you will still see non-personalized advertisements on the Website.
The Website collects the following data using a cookie when serving personalized ads:
- IP Address
- Operating System type
- Operating System version
- Device Type
- Language of the website
- Web browser type
- Email (in hashed form)
Mediavine Partners (companies listed below with whom Mediavine shares data) may also use this data to link to other end user information the partner has independently collected to deliver targeted advertisements. Mediavine Partners may also separately collect data about end users from other sources, such as advertising IDs or pixels, and link that data to data collected from Mediavine publishers in order to provide interest-based advertising across your online experience, including devices, browsers and apps. This data includes usage data, cookie information, device information, information about interactions between users and advertisements and websites, geolocation data, traffic data, and information about a visitor’s referral source to a particular website. Mediavine Partners may also create unique IDs to create audience segments, which are used to provide targeted advertising.
If you would like more information about this practice and to know your choices to opt-in or opt-out of this data collection, please visit National Advertising Initiative opt out page. You may also visit Digital Advertising Alliance website and Network Advertising Initiative website to learn more information about interest-based advertising. You may download the AppChoices app at Digital Advertising Alliance’s AppChoices app to opt out in connection with mobile apps, or use the platform controls on your mobile device to opt out.
For specific information about Mediavine Partners, the data each collects and their data collection and privacy policies, please visit Mediavine Partners.
5. Data stored in your browser
The site uses your browser’s local storage (not essential cookies) for: dark/light theme preference, your myWTS session token, recent search history on this device, cached salary results, and a local count of lookups this month. You can clear this at any time via your browser settings; signing out removes your session token.
A short-lived cookie may be set with the last job ID you searched, to support page behaviour. Theme and session data are stored locally rather than in cookies.
6. Recent lookups feed
The homepage may show a public feed of recently checked jobs (job title, location, salary range, and country). This is built from aggregate salary data and is not tied to individual users or accounts.
7. How we use your information
We use the data above to: provide salary lookups; operate myWTS accounts and saved history; send sign-in codes; secure the site against bots and abuse; improve performance and fix bugs; understand usage through analytics; and display advertising that helps keep the service free.
We do not sell your personal information to recruiters, employers, or advertising agencies. We do not share your email or saved job history with Seek or other job boards.
8. Third-party service providers
We rely on trusted providers who process data on our behalf, including:
Amazon Web Services (AWS) — hosting, Lambda, DynamoDB, and logs (primarily Australia/Sydney).
Cloudflare — CDN, security, and Turnstile.
Google — Tag Manager and Analytics.
Mediavine — programmatic advertising.
Amplitude — product analytics and session replay.
Resend — transactional sign-in emails.
These providers may process data in countries other than New Zealand or Australia (including the United States). We choose reputable vendors and limit the data shared to what they need to perform their service.
9. How long we keep data
Sign-in codes expire within minutes. Sessions expire after 30 days of inactivity or when you sign out. Aggregate salary records for jobs may be retained indefinitely to power caching and the recent feed. Account and saved-lookup data is kept while your account is active. Server logs are retained for a limited period for security and troubleshooting.
10. Security
We protect operational systems with access controls and multi-factor authentication. Email addresses in our database are stored as hashes. Sign-in uses one-time codes rather than passwords. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, but we take reasonable steps to safeguard your information.
11. Your choices and rights
You may use salary lookups without an account. You can sign out of myWTS at any time. You may clear local storage and cookies in your browser. Under New Zealand and Australian privacy law you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about you. To delete your myWTS account and saved history, email [email protected] from the address on your account.
12. Children
The Services are not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
14. Contact us
